French bishops issue message for soccer championship

June 15, 2016

Expressing wishes for “moments of peaceful joy,” the French bishops have issued a message as the nation hosts 24 teams that are competing in the quadrennial European soccer championship.

The bishops noted that fans will find churches in the host cities and praised the games as an occasion of “solidarity and communion.” The bishops also called upon players to avoid “physical aggression” and spectators to “fraternize with all” so that “adversaries become friends.”
