Pope visits mentally disabled as part of ‘mercy Friday’ initiative

May 16, 2016

Pope Francis made a visit on May 13 to the Il Chicco community, a residence for 18 persons with intellectual disabilities.

Il Chicco is one of over 140 communities associated with L’Arche, which was founded by Jean Vanier in 1964.

Accompanied by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, Pope Francis joined the residents and volunteers for a snack, spoke with several residents, and visited the community’s workshop.

During the jubilee year of mercy, the Pope has set aside a monthly “mercy Friday” to perform such works in mercy.
