Vatileaks trial continues with questioning of witnesses

April 27, 2016

The "Vatileaks II" trial moved into a new phase on April 26, with the questioning of witnessing before a Vatican tribunal.

The first witness to be questioned was Stefano Fralleoni, who was accountant general of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs during the period when documents were leaked to journalists. Msgr. Angel Lucio Vallejo Balda, who was secretary of that prefecture at the time, has already admitted that he was responsible for giving journalists access to confidential documents.

The questioning of Fralleoni-- who is not a defendant in the case-- took up the day's entire court session. He testified that he had perceived mounting tensions during an investigation of Vatican finances, and noticed that Msgr. Vallejo Balda and his co-defendant, Francesca Chaoqui, began meeting frequently behind closed doors. Fralleoni also reported noticing some "anomalies" in the handling of confidential documents.
