Guard against Western influence, Senegal cardinal warns

March 30, 2016

Cardinal Théodore-Adrien Sarr, the recently retired archbishop of Dakar, Senegal, warned West Africa’s bishops not to succumb to Western influence, particularly American efforts to promote same-sex marriage.

“Avoid the several limitations of the Western world and do things based in our traditions, our practices and customs,” he recently said to 40 bishops from the region, according to the Catholic News Service of Nigeria. “Beware. We are living in a world where the Western world, especially the Americans, behave like people who have to think for the rest of the world.”

“They have to decide for the rest of the world, but we say that no, you can’t decide for the rest of the world,” he added.
