Judge backs Massachusetts diocese, rules $750k gift to closed parish can go to diocese

March 04, 2016

A Massachusetts judge has ruled that a $750,00 gift to a parish in the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, should be given to the diocese, since the parish has been closed.

The late Irene Kuzontkoski had given the money to the parish of St. Mary of the Assumption, which was closed in a restructuring shortly after her death in 2009. Members of the parish council argued in court that they should have some control over the disposition of the funds.

The Springfield diocese, which argued successfully for control of the gift, said that the money will go to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church: the parish to which members of St. Mary of the Assumption parish were assigned.
