Date and place set for pan-Orthodox council

January 27, 2016

The long-awaited worldwide council of Orthodox Church leaders will be held on June 16 through 27 at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, outside the city of Chania.

The Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate has revealed that Orthodox leaders have agreed on the rules of procedure for the unprecedented meeting, as well as the topics to be discussed.

The "Great and Holy Synod" will convene as the Orthodox world prepares for the celebration of Penteocost: June 19 on the Orthodox liturgical calendar. The delegates to the council will celebrate Pentecost at the cathedral of St. Minas in Heraklion, a city that, like Chania, is located on the northern edge of Crete.
