International Eucharistic Congress begins in Philippines
January 25, 2016
The 51st International Eucharistic Congress began on January 24 in the Philippines.
Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Myanmar, the Pope’s legate, preached at the opening Mass in Cebu City.
“The Eucharist calls for a third world war, a third world war against poverty … a third world war against a world that produces more weapons while more than half a billion don’t have enough food,” he said.
“Christ is calling us to be disciples, to carry His cross,” he continued. “The Mass of the devotee ends in an hour, but the Mass of a disciple is unending.”
Cardinal Bo also called upon those in attendance to oppose abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty, which he described as “enemies of the Eucharist.”
