Dominicans begin 800th anniversary celebration; Pope grants special indulgence

November 09, 2015

On November 7, the Order of Preachers began a jubilee year in celebration of the 800th anniversary of its founding. The Order also announced that Pope Francis has granted a special jubilee indulgence.

Speaking at the Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome, Father Bruno Cadoré, the order’s 87th Master, said that “Santa Sabina is the place where Dominic’s preaching was rooted. He loved to pray here, he loved to contemplate, to speak to God. He loved to allow the mysteries of Christ’s life to inhabit his own life. And then he also loved, they say, to speak about God to those he met, with whom he spoke about the Gospel of peace.”

During the jubilee year, the faithful may gain a plenary indulgence if, in addition to fulfilling the usual conditions, they participate in certain official jubilee celebrations or if they make a pilgrimage to a Dominican church, pray before the Blessed Sacrament, and conclude with the prayers listed in the indulgence decree.
