Theme announced for 2016 World Day of Migrants and Refugees

August 20, 2015

The Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People has announced that the theme of the 102nd World Day of Migrants and Refugees will be “migrants and refugees challenge us: the response of the Gospel of mercy.”

The day will be observed on January 17, 2016, during the Jubilee of Mercy, and the pontifical council called for a renewal in corporal and spiritual works of mercy toward migrants and refugees.

The day was first observed in Italy in 1915, a few months after the beginning of World War I, at the behest of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation (now the Congregation of Bishops).
