Episcopal Church in US approves same-sex weddings

July 02, 2015

The Episcopal Church in the US has given its approval to same-sex marriages.

The Episcopal General Convention, meeting in Salt Lake City, voted overwhelmingly to allow Episcopal priests to preside at same-sex wedding ceremonies. The decision—confirming a practice that was already widespread in Episcopal churches in the US—will formally take effect on November 29, the first Sunday in Advent.

To allow for same-sex ceremonies, the General Convention also voted to change the wording of the wedding ritual, eliminating the terms “husband” and “wife” in favor of references to “the couple.”
