El Salvador’s leading prelate hopes for declaration of martyrdom for 500 war victims

March 12, 2015

Archbishop José Luis Escobar Alas of San Salvador expressed hope that the Vatican would eventually declare that more than 500 victims of the Salvadoran Civil War were martyrs, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.

The prelate said that the Church in El Salvador is investigating the causes of more than “500 brother priests, religious and laity, especially catechists who gave their lives for their faith” before and during the war, which began in 1979 and ended in 1992.
