Swiss Guard ready to counter Islamic threat, new commandant says
February 19, 2015
The new leader of the Swiss Guard has said that his men are prepared to defend Pope Francis from Islamic terrorists.
Colonel Christoph Graf, who was appointed earlier this month as commandant of the Swiss Guard, told the Italian daily Il Giornale that Vatican security officials are fully aware of reports that the Islamic State has made the Vatican a target.
"Following the terrorists' threats, we're asking the guards to be more attentive and observe peoples' movements closely,” Colonel Graf said. “If something happens, we’re ready.”
