German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican on February 21.
A spokesman for the German leader said that she would speak with the Pope about inter-religious affairs, the global economy, and the role of Europe. This will be their 2nd meeting since the election of Pope Francis.
Germany, the economic linchpin of the European Union, faces heavy pressure from other European nations to relax its insistence on budgetary austerity, while inside Germany popular opinion weighs against further concessions to debtor nations.
