Pope calls upon laity to evangelize cities
February 09, 2015
In a February 7 address to the Pontifical Council for the Laity, which gathered to reflect on the topic of “encountering God in the heart of the city,” Pope Francis called upon the lay faithful to act as leaven in cities.
Within each city, said the Pope, there exists an “anti-city” in which persons, by and large invisible, lack means, live in “non-places,” and lack human warmth and relationships.
Describing the city as a “fertile ground” for apostolate, Pope Francis called upon the laity to be “joyful announcers of the Gospel” to others. As they proclaim the Gospel with respect for others, they will find that the Holy Spirit has already prepared the hearts of their hearers to receive the message.
