Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has concluded a three-day meeting in Hungary with the presidents of the doctrinal commissions of Europe’s bishops’ conferences.
On January 13, after Cardinal Müller read out a letter from Pope Francis, he and the episcopal conference officials discussed “a number of issues connected with the distinctiveness and salvific universality of Jesus Christ as well as the proclamation of the Gospel as the primary task of the Church in Europe,” according to a press release that followed the meeting.
The last two days of the meeting were devoted to “the questions posed by gender theory, Christian anthropology and religious freedom,” as well as “various practical issues connected with the new evangelization, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the workings of a doctrinal commission.”
Cardinal Müller’s predecessors conducted similar meetings with regional bishops seven times between 1984 and 2009.
