New secretary of Pontifical Biblical Commission

December 12, 2014

Pope Francis has named an Italian Jesuit as the new secretary of Pontifical Biblical Commission.

Father Pietro Bovati, 64, is a professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and was first appointed a member of the Commission by Pope Benedict in 2008. He succeeds another Jesuit, Father Klemens Stock, 80, who has served as secretary since 2002.

Founded in 1902, the Commission since 1971 has been an advisory body at the service of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. The prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, currently Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, is the commission’s ex-officio president.
