Jesuits to meet, select new leader in October 2016

December 10, 2014

The Society of Jesus will hold a general congregation to elect a new leader beginning on October 2, 2016.

Father Adolfo Nicolas, the current superior general of the Jesuit order, had announced in May that he planned to step down late in 2016, when he will be 80 years old. But he had not announced an exact date for the general congregation that would choose his successor.

In his December 9 announcement, Father Nicolas remarked that Jesuits around the world would be preparing for the general congregation during the Year of Consecrated Life, and encouraged his fellow Jesuits to follow the urging of Pope Francis to “rediscover the joy of consecrated life, recover our prophetic witness that ‘wakes up the world.’”
