Cardinal Napier added by Pope to organizing committee for October 2015 Synod meeting
November 21, 2014
Cardinal Wilfrid Napier of Durban, South Africa, has been added to the list of prelates who will supervise the organization of the Synod of Bishops in October 2015.
Pope Francis added Cardinal Napier to the leadership group that already includes Cardinals Peter Erdo of Budapest, Raymundo Damasceno Assis of Aparecida, Brazil, Luis Tagle of Manila, and André Vingt-Trois of Paris.
During the October 2014 meeting of the Synod, Cardinal Napier had been outspoken in his criticism of an interim report. Soon thereafter he was appointed by the Pope to join a committee of prelates preparing the Synod’s final report. His appointment to the organizing committee for next year’s Synod meeting appears to be a gesture by the Pontiff underlining his commitment to open discussion and debate.
