Successor named for Cardinal Pell in Australia

September 18, 2014

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Anthony Fisher of Parramatta as the new Archbishop of Sydney.

Australia’s leading see has been vacant since February, when Cardinal George Pell was appointed Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy.

Born in 1960, Bishop Fisher was an attorney when he entered the Dominican order at 25. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1991, was founding director of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and the Family in Melbourne in 2000, and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Sydney in 2003.

In 2008, he coordinated World Youth Day in Sydney and two years later became bishop of Parramatta.
