Vatican newspaper decries surrogacy

August 05, 2014

L’Osservatore Romano has published a front-page article lamenting the practice of surrogacy.

The article follows news that a Thai woman acted as a surrogate mother for an Australian couple and bore twins, one of whom has Down syndrome, despite pressure to abort the child. The Australian couple refused to accept the child with Down syndrome, took the other child, and has reportedly not paid the Thai woman all of the $9,100 that was promised her.

Writing in L’Osservatore Romano, Lucetta Scaraffia said that the case is an “obvious consequence” of viewing a child as a product. Surrogacy, she added, exploits women and is a “new slavery.”

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith discussed why surrogacy is immoral in its 1987 instruction Donum Vitae.
