Vatican official comments on talks with traditional Anglicans
March 06, 2009
Msgr. Marc Langham, an official at the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, has downplayed hopes for a corporate reception of traditional Anglicans into the Catholic Church. “In our congregation, we would have trouble with that concept,” he told the Associated Press. “Conversion is an individual process.” He downplayed a letter from Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, as a “standard Vatican holding letter.”
Among the problems associated with a corporate reception of members of the Traditional Anglican Communion into the Church is that “the tradition of married bishops is alien to the Latin rite,” said Langham. Archbishop John Hepworth, primate of the Traditional Anglican Communion, is married.
