Albany diocese closes 33 parishes

January 19, 2009

The Diocese of Albany this weekend announced the closing of 33 parishes. “Now that the branches of the tree have been pruned, so to speak, I believe that we can have parish communities that are more effective in areas of prayer and worship, faith formation, Christian service, and social justice advocacy,” Bishop Howard Hubbard said yesterday. Bishop Hubbard, now 70, has led the upstate New York diocese since 1977. In 1980, 527 priests ministered to 412,000 Catholics in the diocese; by 2006, 340 priests were ministering to 403,000 Catholics.
