In an effort to counter pressure from the state government to have smaller families, some parishes in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala--the center of Catholicism in the nation since its evangelization by St. Thomas the Apostle--are offering a $225 bonus to families that have a fifth child.
The state is predominantly Hindu; 25% of residents are Muslim, while 19% are Christian.
