PEACE OF GOD

The permanent immunity from armed hostility legislated by the Church in the early Middle Ages. It anathematized all persons who attacked noncombatants or invaded sanctuaries. Pax Dei laid severe penalties on those who plundered clerics, merchants, peasants, women, or children. and it was enforced by associations organized for this purpose.
