OMOPHORION

A vestment of the Greek Rite corresponding to the pallium in the Roman Church. It is abroad band often of silk or velvet, ornamented with crosses, worn around the neck and over the shoulders and breast. It is worn by Byzantine, Armenian, and Coptic bishops and archbishops. Originally made of wool, it symbolizes the duties of bishops as shepherds of their people.
