Followers of the Gnostic Marcus, who flourished in Gaul in the middle of the second century. Marcus was a magician who had women serve as his prophetesses, and whose disciples indulged in elaborate sacramental rites and fantastic speculation about numbers. Ignoring the canonical New Testament, their favorite scriptures were the Acts of St. Thomas.
