JACOBINS

Name originally given to the Dominican friars in France because their first house in Northern France was founded in Paris in 1218 on the Rue St.-Jacques. During the French Revolution, in 1789, this house was acquired by the radical club Breton, where they came to be called Jacobins. The term is now applied to all holding revolutionary views.
