HOLY ROSARY, FEAST OF THE

A special liturgical commemoration, on October 7, of the victory of the Christian naval forces over the Moslems at Lepanto (1571). The feast is now an obligatory memorial of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. It recalls that Our Lady was invoked under this title by the faithful who prayed the Rosary in begging for a Christian victory in spite of overwhelming odds against them. Pope St. Pius V instituted the feast.
