DOWRY OF MARY

A title of praise given to the people of England in early times. As expressed in 1399 by Thomas Arundel (1353-1414), Archbishop of Canterbury: "We the English being the servants of her special inheritance and her own dowry, as we are commonly called, aught to surpass others in the warmth of our praise and devotion (to the Blessed Virgin Mary)." Also called Our Lady's Dowry.
