CAMPANILE

A form of bell tower that was developed by Lombard architects and prevails in Italy. It is usually a tall, slender tower, somewhat detached from the church, with no buttresses and topped with a turret that contains the belfry chamber. Outstanding campaniles are found in Venice, Pisa, and Florence.
