ALTAR CARDS

Printed or manuscript cards placed on the altar and facing the priest during Mass. They were to help the memory of the celebrant when it was inconvenient to use the Missal. Three cards, center and two sides, were commonly used, though only one was prescribed. Still in use in some places, they are no longer required by the rubrics.
