Spotlight: a movie that says more than its makers realize

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Jan 08, 2016

"I'll be writing more about Spotlight soon," I promised early in December. And I did.

It is clear that the Church is under attack. What really troubles me is that often the attackers come from withing the Church!

From Phil's "First Things" review: "Similarly, in a quick bow to conventional wisdom, Spotlight assures viewers that sexual abuse has nothing to do with homosexuality." The statistics do not support that popular conclusion. Even a brief perusal of the so-called John Jay Report informs us that in excess of 75% of victims of predatory male clergy were male, with 70.8% of clergy offenders being "sexually deviant and characterized as homosexual pedophiles" (p. 181 of the report).

Just finished The Faithful Departed, and it was as sad as it was well-written. I'm not sure I'm up to watching a movie on the same topic.
