Sadly, Penn State Had Some Catholic Dioceses as a Model of "What Not to Do"

Throughout reports on the abuse scandal surrounding Penn State, I haven't been able to escape that feeling of deja vu. There are so many similarities to the Church sex abuse scandals of recent years, it is both familiar and frightening. If you are following the Penn State story and keep history in mind, you can easily predict what is going to happen next.
So on Monday when the NCAA announced a $60M fine for Penn State, I thought, “That’s nothing compared to what they might end up paying to settle civil suits.”
Then followed today's report: CBS Sports: Lawyers: Man claims to be Sandusky shower victim, plans to sue Penn State
It is sad that we have such a precedent indicating how things are likely to play out.

What is most disturbing is the abyssmal performance of the USCCB even compared to the secular authorities and sports commentators who expressed no tolerance for the abuse and cover-up. A recent sports column addressed what the Church can learn from the NCAA in this matter. In Sunday's gospel, Our Lord's reaction to those in the Temple who abused his Father's house was disturbing and violent. What is sad is not how it plays out, but rather that men who could have and should have- did not.

One courageous Penn State Board Member remarked to the media that the Board failed to exercise due diligence in monitoring agencies affiliated with the University. Have not heard from him since.
