The October issue of Catholic World Report is now out!

By Domenico Bettinelli, Jr. ( articles - email ) | Oct 06, 2004

The October issue of Catholic World Report is now on newsstands and in mailboxes and here's what you'll find inside:

  • Politics and Communion: With many prominent Catholic politicians flouting Church teachings on crucial moral issues, American bishops are struggling with their disciplinary duties. Bishop Rene Gracida explains why the bishops must take action, and reveals that he did bar one dissenting politician from receiving the Eucharist.
  • A Dangerous Precedent?: Bankruptcy proceedings for the Archdiocese of Portland are progressing. As CWR went to press, a hearing was taking place to determine whether the clergy sex-abuse lawsuits pending against the archdiocese would be removed from state jurisdiction to federal court. Still undetermined, notes Brian O'Neel, is a key question: whether parish churches and schools are actually the property of the archdiocese.
  • Sacred Language Restored: Michael Gilchrist gives readers a glimpse of an improved English translation of the Mass.
  • Remembering Msgr. Kelly: An old friend and colleague, Msgr. Michael Wrenn, pays homage to a CWR contributor, a Catholic intellectual stalwart, and an American original.
  • Four Years Later: Michael Hirst assesses the status of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, four years after the start of the second intifada-- taking into account the effects of "the Wall."
  • The "Social Vaccine": At an international AIDS conferences, Anto Akkara reports, faith-based groups find some grudging acceptance, as well as lingering hostility.
  • Papal Pilgrimages: Despite the difficulties he now encounters when he travels, John Paul II completed two summer visits to Marian shrines: at Lourdes and Loreto.
  • Ecumenical Gambit: The restoration of a precious icon brings sincere words of thanks from Moscow, but no signs of a thaw in Orthodox hostility toward the Vatican.
  • And Phil Lawler's Editorial, Evangelization in an Age of Conflict: Christians are not called to destroy the infidels; we are called to convert them.
