In Gratitude for Our Friends

By Peter Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Sep 28, 2010

At Mass this morning, I offered my intentions for the visitors to CatholicCulture.org—most particularly for our frequent visitors and supporters. As they say, it is nice to have friends.

I am deeply appreciative of the many who have come to CatholicCulture.org and who have taken the time to make a contribution, send a supportive note, or engage in debate.

In 1993 I was sixteen years old and already involved in working on Trinity Communications’ first “online” project, the Catholic Resource Network—now viewed as an ancient, ancient (ancient) ancestor of our current web apostolate. I monitored the modem bank, helped produce content, did a lot of design work, and assisted users in troubleshooting their dial-up problems. I was proud to do all of this, but you know what the best part was?

The best part was getting thanked by a visitor for the help that was given. Maybe I answered a technical question, helped out with some information about Church history, or answered a question about Catholic doctrine. But when a person thanked me for that help, I felt great. I was proud and invigorated, all the more because I knew that the work was worthwhile.

Today, the work is still worthwhile, we still receive thanks for the work that we do at CatholicCulture.org, and it still makes me feel great. But the real thanks should be for the users—not for supporting our work per se, but for being the kind of people who care about important things.

CatholicCulture.org is not, and never will be, a flashy organization. We don’t have a Johnny-on-the-Spot leader, we don’t seek to set trends, and we don’t try to have a “pop” feel to the work that we do. We are a Catholic leader on the web, but often it is other sites that put out the eye-catching PR. We try not to dissolve the value of the content on CatholicCulture.org with user commentary and input that serves to create confusion and noise, rather than pointed and valuable dialogue.

For this reason, our core audience is smaller, but more mature. And I am grateful for you! You care that serious issues are treated seriously. You take the time to read and learn about important topics that others don’t take the time to understand. You care about your Faith and its cultural impact.

So, I wanted to take a moment to thank you.

Thanks for being who you are, thanks for being part of the “Church Militant”, and thanks for being a friend to me and to the work of CatholicCulture.org!
