Don't Pass Me By. Don't Make Me Cry. On second thought....

L'Osservatore Romano is prepared to forgive the Beatles for their offenses against Christian morality, in light of their "magical mystery tour creative alchemy." This is exciting news for those who are still living in the early 1970s. 

Beatle drummer Ringo Starr, who lives in 2002, is having none of it. "I think [the Vatican] has more to talk about than the Beatles," he says. Of course Starr is referring to the sex-abuse crisis. He finds it odd that, with every other media outlet carrying stories about the Pope's alleged mishandling of that issue, the Vatican newspaper finds time to talk about the Beatles. Point taken. 

The problem here is that L'Osservatore Romano seems to care about the pop music of a bygone era. Ringo doesn't care what the Vatican thinks of him. Under ordinary circumstances, frankly, I wouldn't care what he thinks of the Vatican. But in this case he's right: the Vatican has more to talk about than the Beatles.
