Do condoms kill?
According to a UN study, the countries in sub-Saharan Africa where condoms are most readily available (Zimbabwe, South Africa) are also the countries with the highest rate of HIV infection. The countries where condoms with the smallest supplies of condoms per adult male (Senegal, Benin, Ghana) boast the lowest rates of HIV infection.
Uganda has adopted an anti-AIDS policy is based primarily on promoting extra-marital abstinence and marital fidelity. That country has seen its HIV infection rate drop from 21% to below 6% in the past decade.
How many such "coincidences" will it take to derail the assumption that the distribution of condoms is a "compassionate" response to the AIDS epidemic?
