To keep things in perspective, here's what happened in California yesterday:
The voters decided to oust a pro-abortion, pro-gay Catholic (Davis) and replace him with a pro-abortion, pro-gay Catholic (Schwarzenegger) instead of a pro-abortion, pro-gay Catholic (Bustamante). And if the state's Church leaders (Cardinal Mahony, Archbishop Levada, etc) made any comment on the entire debased contest, I missed it.
Most conservative Republican leaders are saying that the Schwarzenegger victory is a step in the right direction since-- even if he is on the wrong side of every key issue, at least he's better than a Democrat.
I heartily disagree. If a liberal Democrat wins, at least there's a chance to build a "culture of life" within the Republic opposition. If a liberal Republican wins, both sides are controlled by the abortion industry and the gay-rights lobby.
Alan Keyes makes the argument persuasively. A Schwarzenegger win is bad for the Republican party-- unless you're prepared to surrender the identity of the GOP to the culture-of-death crowd.
