9 dead, 40 wounded in attack on church in Jordan; Pope prays for victims

October 26, 2026

Jordanian police today arrested three suspects in an October 23 attack on a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud (Hmood).

Gunmen opened fire on mourners during a funeral. The attack left nine dead and 40 wounded.

“The blood of Jordanians is precious, and we will strike those who transgress against this country with an iron fist,” said King Abdullah.

The attack, he added, was “the result of extremist terrorist ideology,” and “we will not allow society to go down this path.”

“My prayers go out to all those who were injured or lost their lives last Friday in the terrorist attack on worshippers at the Orthodox Church of Saint George in Hamoud, Jordan,” Pope Leo XIV said on October 25. “I express my closeness to the community and the entire country, which is known for its peaceful coexistence and respect between different religions.”
