CWN Editor's Note: Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, met with Pope Leo XIV on October 23 and thanked the Pontiff for his support and the Vatican’s humanitarian diplomacy.
“Pope Leo XIV thanked the bishops, priests, monastics and faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for their distinctive witness of faith during the war,” according to a statement from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. “The Major Archbishop, in turn, assured the Pope of the prayers and support of Ukrainian Greek Catholics as he continues his recovery from thoracic surgery.”
As he thanked the Pontiff for the Vatican’s efforts to secure the release of prisoners of war, the Major Archbishop gave Pope Leo a new list of prisoners.
“Mother Church is working to ensure that all our prisoners of war and illegally detained hostages are released as soon as possible,” the Major Archbishop said.
