French bishops issue message on Pope’s apostolic journey

October 08, 2026

The permanent council of the Conference of Bishops of France emphasized gratitude and joy in a message on Pope Leo XIV’s recent apostolic journey there.

“The journey of Pope Leo XIV was an immense grace for the Church in France and for the whole country,” the bishops said in their October 7 message. “What we experienced, gathered around the successor of Peter, had a scent of Pentecost! Today, with you, we want to thank God for these days of deep joy and communion.”

“It is up to us,’ the bishops added, “to take care of all the seeds sown on the occasion of Leo XIV’s visit and to accompany their growth! May the happy memory of these magnificent moments help us to be peacemakers, at a time when our country is experiencing serious tensions”—a reference to the student protests there.
