Accompany and do not neglect couples that cannot receive Communion, Pope tells Czech bishop

October 01, 2026

Pope Leo XIV told a Czech bishop that couples who cannot receive Holy Communion should be accompanied, rather than neglected.

During a September 30 audience with the Pope, Bishop Tomáš Holub of Plzeň “discussed the pastoral accompaniment of people unable to fully live a Eucharistic life, such as divorced individuals or same-sex couples,” the Diocese of Plzeň said in a statement. “In this context, the Holy Father referred to the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, emphasizing the need to accompany these individuals rather than neglecting them.”

According to the statement, Bishop Holub also discussed his diocesan synod’s call for “greater lay involvement in the life and functioning of the Church. The Holy Father appreciated this direction and its significance for the life of the Church. At the same time, he reminded the bishop that all conclusions must be in alignment with the Czech Bishops’ Conference.”
