Pope Leo ends COVID-era salary cuts

Pope Leo XIV issued an apostolic letter ending Pope Francis’s COVID-era salary cuts for cardinals and senior Vatican officials.

Pope Francis’s measures “can be brought to an end, in the certainty that the institutions of the Holy See and Vatican City State will continue, through different means, their commitment to ensuring economic sustainability,” Pope Leo wrote.

Pope Leo’s apostolic letter Quelle misure, dated September 1 and released September 14, was issued motu proprio (at the Pontiff’s own initiative). It repealed the provisions of Un futuro sostenibile (A Sustainable Future), a motu proprio issued by Pope Francis in 2021.
