Continue to promote culture of peace, Pope tells Catholic Nonviolence Initiative

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State of His Holiness, sent a telegram in the Pope Leo’s name to participants in the inaugural conference of Pax Christi International’s Catholic Nonviolence Initiative.

The Pontiff encouraged participants “to continue the mission of promoting a culture of peace, justice, and reconciliation in the world, rooted in the Gospel and lived out in daily life, so as to become builders of ‘houses of peace,’ where one learns to defuse hostility through dialogue, where justice is practiced, and where forgiveness is cherished.”

The conference, “Unarmed and Disarming Peace: The Church’s Emerging Paradigm Shift to Gospel Nonviolence,” took place September 9-10 at the Seraphicum in Rome. Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Myanmar told participants that “nonviolent strategies are not a lack of defense; they are a more effective form of defense.”
