CWN Editor's Note: The Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar has announced Vatican approval to proceed with the cause for beatification of 35 people who died in mob violence in the Kandhamal district in 2008.

The archdiocese weigh the case of Kanteswar Digal, a Catholic catechist, and 34 other people who died when radical Hindus carried out a campaign of violence against Christians. The rioting was provoked by the death of a prominent Hindu leader—a killing that was later attributed to Maoists.

The 35 candidates for beatification are among more than 100 people who died in the Kandhamal violence. Another 50,000 Christians were driven from their homes during the rioting.
