CWN Editor's Note: “Everything must be done to put an end to the suffering of the people of the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said the Association of Bishops’ Conferences of Central Africa, in a statement released after a meeting in Rome last week.

The bishops—representing Burundi and Rwanda as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo—called upon “all those who continue to sow death, devastation and division in our region, from far or near, to listen to the Church’s call for universal solidarity and to be guided by the search for integral human development.”

Armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has cost nearly 6 million lives, the statement reported, citing figures from the International Rescue Committee.
