Brazilian Cardinal Eusebio Scheid dead at 88

CWN Editor's Note: Cardinal Eusebio Scheid, the retired Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, died on January 13 at the age of 88. He had been appointed Bishop of Sao Jose dos Campos in 1981, then Archbishop of Florianopolis in 1991, before becoming Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro in 2001. He served in that role until his retirement in 2009. He received his red hat from Pope John Paul II in 2003.
With the death of Cardinal Scheid there are now 227 living members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 128 are eligible to vote in a papal conclave.
