30,000 Italians mourn reputed stigmatist

November 06, 2009

Six Italian bishops concelebrated the funeral Mass of Natuzza Evolo, a reputed stigmatist who died on November 1 at the age of 85. Thirty thousand mourners paid their respects to the illiterate mother of five, who spent her days in Paravati, Calabria, and reportedly experienced the stigmata and other mystical phenomena beginning in 1936.

Paying tribute during the November 3 funeral Mass to the woman who founded cenacles of prayer and was known for her humility and docility to Church authorities, Bishop Luigi Renzo of Mileto-Nicotera-Tropea preached, “For us she is already a saint, as she is in paradise.” Congolese Archbishop Emery Kabongo Kanundowi has also offered a Mass in her memory at St. Peter’s Basilica.
