US bishops asked to disband CCHD

October 01, 2009

A Washington-based "watchdog" group has called upon the US bishops' conference to disband the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), a group that has been criticized frequently for funding radical groups that support anti-Catholic causes. Terrence Scanlon, the president of the Capital Rearch Center, has written to each member of the American hierarchy, arguing that the “CCHD does a disservice to all Catholics when it asks them to make a contribution to organizations whose mission is more often political than charitable." Citing his own group's study, which showed multiple connections between the CCHD and anti-Catholic organizations, Scanlon suggested that the CCHD should be either abandoned or thoroughly reformed.
