Justice Ginsburg rules Connecticut diocese must unseal abuse documents
August 26, 2009
Upholding lower court decisions, United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has ruled that the Diocese of Bridgeport must unseal 12,000 pages from lawsuits filed against the diocese when Cardinal Edward Egan served as bishop.
The lawsuits had been settled in 2001 on condition that the documents would remained sealed; the following year, four newspapers filed suit to make them public. The diocese is expected to ask the entire Supreme Court to rule on the issue.
